Hydration is key: tips for keeping your cat hydrated during the hot summer months

Summer is here – the season of fun, sun, and frolicking around with your furry friends! However, with the warm weather comes the particularly important responsibility of keeping your pets hydrated throughout the day. Read through these simple tips:

Provide plenty of water: It may seem like a no-brainer, but keeping a fresh supply of water on hand is key to ensuring your pets stay hydrated. Make sure their water bowls are always filled and topped up frequently throughout the day. You can opt to add water to their food for extra hydration and nutrients in their diet.

Try a pet fountain: If your pet isn’t too thrilled about drinking from a water bowl, investing in a pet fountain is a good idea. Not only does it provide a constant flow of fresh water, but the sound of running water can also be enticing to pets. It also has the added benefit of filtering out water impurities.

Take time to cool off: Pets, especially those with dark coats, can quickly become overheated under the sun. It’s essential to provide a shaded area where your pet can cool off, even if they are only out for a short time.

Offer ice cubes or frozen treats: Giving your pets ice cubes and frozen treats is a fun way to keep your pets hydrated. Try making your own by freezing low-sodium chicken or beef broth in ice cube trays and let them enjoy chewing on these cold treats as a break from the summer heat.

Know the signs of dehydration: Despite your best efforts, your pets can still become dehydrated during the summer. It’s important to know the common signs of dehydration so you can act if needed. These can include dry mouth and gums, sunken eyes, lethargic appearance, appetite loss, and dark urine or no urine output. Make sure to give them water immediately and contact your veterinarian if symptoms persist.

Ensuring that your pets stay hydrated is crucial for their health and well-being during the summer. By following these tips, you can keep your furry friends cool, hydrated and happy all summer long.
